Programming a General Electric universal remote lets you consolidate the control of multiple consumer electronics devices in to a single remote. Once you program, you can easily manage a variety of functionalities across the devices such as power, input, volume control and channel navigation.
You can program a GE universal remote in three ways: by entering a code, by using ‘manual code search‘ and by ‘auto code search‘. With a code, you manually enter a 3 or 4-digit numeric code for your device where as with code search methods, you manually search for a working code or the remote automatically search for a compatible code for your device. The code search methods are real life savers especially when you do not know the exact code.
Whether you want to replace a TV remote at your home or to set up the remote for your clients, this article is for you. It walks you through detailed step-by-step instructions for all methods. Moreover, we will also show you code identification, programming favorites and master volume control.
1. Direct Code Entry
Direct code entry is the manual method of entering a code using your remote’s number keys. Before you proceed with the method, you should have a list of codes compatible with your specific device brand. You can use our code lookup tool to find the GE remote codes. Once you have a list of codes, follow the below given steps:

- Aim the remote at your device and test the buttons (e.g. power, volume, channel, etc.). If they don’t work, repeat the steps 2-5 with the next code for your device.
Note that some codes may control only a few device functions. To get mote functionality, try other available codes until your find the fully functional one.
2. Manual Code Search
Manual code search is a method of scanning the codes with our interaction. This is an older method and may not be available in newer models. Here is how to perform this code search.

Below given are the steps to do the auto code search.
- Power on your device.
- Press and hold the Setup button until the LED turns on.

- Test the buttons of the remote. If everything works as expected, you are done. If not repeat the search.
Now that your remote is programmed automatically, do you know which code worked? Well, there is a simple process to find it.
